We went there on my first trip to NYC over the holidays with friends when I was in high school. It was our first trip far from home (Oklahoma) alone without adults at the age of 17. I remember it as being so over-the-top and dramatic and wonderful and it made us feel so sophisticated and "grown up" to order risotto with truffles. The lights, the crystal dining room, all the older ladies in their floor-length furs.  We spent the rest of the trip eating from hotdog carts and noodle houses, but that night was worth the blow to our modest, teenaged-traveler budgets for the experience of it all. First CBGB (where we spent New Year's Eve that same year), now Tavern on the Green. Sigh. Those events are what I'll always think of when I think back to that trip. At least I have my photos.
My parents took my sister and I there there to end a weekend trip to the American Girl store with my daughter and niece.  We went to brunch after a walk up 5th Ave to the Plaza to see the portrait of Eloise and a carriage ride through Central Park.  They were so impressed and used their best manners (we have a picture of them using raised pinkies and giggling!). The flowers, the crystal and the ambience were wonderful - I will never forget how much they loved eating there.  The whole weekend was like a fairy tale for the then-seven-year olds!!
