Hello -
There are SOOO many places in San Francisco. . . . and one of my favorites is certainly not the "best" in the way of menu, food or even service . .. but, this is an authentic local joint - 30's/40's ish art-deco interior with a (frequently playing) jazz/blues trio (no cover) - and a WONDERFUL bar. I'd go just to have a drink here as this is an "old school" San Fran location.
Difficult to locate - you need to find Gold Street and then "yes" - you DO turn down the alley and drive about 35 yards . . . but, my suggestion is take a cab ! Wonderful place to start your evening, and, if you're like me - the ambiance will eventually meld with the couple of drinks and why would you want to go anywhere else ??
Anyway - check out Bix on Gold street - here's a link to their web site -

This is traditional authentic local S.F. stuff - - - pricey but not over the top.
