My wife and I always argue about how much to tip - mostly when we eat at Volt. I usually go for 20% if the service is what I would expect it to be; she's a bit looser with the coin. I don't mind too much to make her happy, and I know that the service will be great next time, but I don't want to go overboard either. Suggestions?

I agree with you in that I think 20% is generous! I was a server for many years, and I was always appreciative of my regulars with a solid 20% tipping mentality!

i normally tip 20%. but it is always 20% of the check without the tax. if the service is not good i tip anywhere from 8-10% but i always tell the manager why.

bad service is not acceptable anywhere much less a first class restaurant like Volt.

Volt is on my bucket list, but like Alinea I can't imagine the experience & professionalism warranting anything less than 20%.
