I have been on the hunt for the best burger in DC. While I'm still on this hunt, the best burger I've found so far is Ray's Hellburger.  I wrote a review about it on my personal blog (not professional...just my meandering comments): http://www.adventuresinshaw.com/2009/06/great-dc-burger-hunt-continuesrays-hellburger/
The metro Detroit area has some great burgers. There's the no frills variety--Redcoat Tavern and Miller's Bar come to mind. Ask a group of Detroiters and these two will be the consensus favorites. There's also some top shelf/all the trimmings burgers like the Brasserie Burger (now at Redcoat Tavern, formerly at Zinc).  Here's a review of several great spots that I posted to examiner.com--  http://www.examiner.com/x-9416-Detroit-Restaurant-Examiner~y2009m7d15-Dining-101-Where-to-get-a-good-burger-in-Detroit

I'm from the L.A. area and I'd say I've got a revolving top three burger joints that never cease to amaze me.

In no particular order :

1.  Umami Burger - it's hard to call this a burger, it's something different all together.
2.  Father's Office - locations in both santa monica and culver city, good bun, very very juicy, super tasty.  If you like Umami, this is it's equal for sure.
3.  Beachwood BBQ - small bbq place in Seal Beach, I consider this more of a "home style" burger, on a regular bun, with a nice beefsteak tomato, thick pickles, crispy iceburg, melted cheddar, but there's something about that thick patty too . . .btw, their bbq is pretty dang good too.

I've still got a handful of burger places to try in the greater la area (8oz., Golden State Cafe, Anisette Brassierre, 26 beach, etc.) and put them up against my reigning top 3.

Here in Charlotte burger bars are popping up on every major corner of town these days. It seems "Burger Bar" in the new "Steak House" around here. One Morton's closes, another Big Daddy's opens.

My favorite burger is mine, or at least my own interpretation of someone else's. I make a combination of Michael Symon's Lola burger and the Umami burger. I grind my own meat 40/40/20 - chuck/sirloin/brisket and mix it with some of the elements that make an Umami burger. I did a burger bar for my son's second birthday complete with parmesan crisps, pancetta crisps, bacon lattices, bruschetta and pesto that I made myself, as well as a number of your standard burger condiments and toppings. People had a ball and I made so many burgers I was able to freeze a dozen or so that were left over and have them whenever I want. Shameless plug, I even wrote about it on my blog: http://www.realmendriveminivans.com/birthday-celebrations-burger-bars/

Still, if we are out, or I'm not up to cooking that night, our favorite destination is Nix, which is in Uptown Charlotte. They've got a good Kobe burger and during happy hour all their burgers are half price.
Once upon in a time, on the Golden Mile (where Burger King is now) was one of those ever-prevalent 80s steakhouse chain restaurants...I've forgotten which one.

BUT, they had the most fabulous burger. Port Wine Cheddar and Bacon. It was delicious.  I'm not big on much besides the proteins (and ketchup) on a burger and it was briliant as a standalone without the vegetables to distract you.

I love Umami burger too! Here in Las Vegas, there's a new place called Bachi Burger that's getting a lot of buzz. They serve Asian inspired burgers, and so far I've been really impressed. The owner was a corporate chef @ Roy's before venturing out...

I wrote a review on them recently: http://vegasmusings.com/?p=5149

Oh, and I love the Burgers at Shake Shack, Madison Square Park, NY.  BEST!
Hi Bryan, Michael,

I recently did a terribly stupid rundown of some local Burger favorites in L.A. My judges (or what was left of them) and I ended up choosing Father's Office, Rustic Canyon and Golden State as our top picks. Here's the full Review with Pics if you're curious. :)

Enjoy~
Alright so I came up with the top burger I have ever eaten. I was starring into my fridge thinking of some delicious additions to add to my swiss and portobello burger I had bought at the local fresh and easy. I had a 10 dollar chunk of Gouda I had just gotten from the beverly hills cheese store and some pears. Of course the burger.... I could play around with some seasonings and flavoring to go in the meat of course but here it is:
A nice juicy burger with gouda cheese and fresh pear slices on fresh baked bread with truffle aioli.
YUMMY
Been waiting to share that with somebody who'd appreciate it let me know what ur thoughts are.
Any late night out in New York city is not complete for me without a trip to L'Express, for a burger at the bar ... they serve traditional french bistro food and you don't have to worry about hurrying up to finish your meal, or getting there too late,  because they are open 24/7. They even have a "Graveyard Menu". The burgers are generous, fresh and juicy, cooked perfectly to order, and the "Le Burger" can be accompanied by a lovely selection of cheeses : swiss, bleu, cheddar, goat or brie. They also have a lean lamb burger that is delicious, nicely seasoned with Moroccan spices.  And the fries that accompany the burgers, traditional frites, to die for.
One of us always gets a burger (usually with bleu), and one of us gets the frisee with lardons and a poached egg ... perfect for late night sharing. It has a great bistro atmosphere and friendly, hip service whatever time you go as well, always lively. But I mainly go for the burger!

Matt's in the Market | Seattle, WA | Don & Joe's Lamb Burger

Matt's is perched on the third floor of a building that shares the same view of the Sound as the Public Market Center sign.  Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends.  This place fills up fast, and for good reason.  The entire staff is incredibly helpful, friendly, and unpretentious.  I always imagine really good restaurants having secret laboratories in the back that hold the secrets to their deliciously addictive food.  But Matt's kitchen is not only open, but also indicative of the homey atmosphere.  Every time I go, it feels like Matt's having me over for dinner with a couple of friends.

Enter Don & Joe's Lamb Burger.  If I were a lamb, this is how I'd want to die, sitting on a brioche bun next to my best friends: bacon, herb mayo, goat cheese, and sweet onion jam.  Normally, I find goat cheese to be a bit of an attention hog, but not this time.  The goat cheese melts beautifully with the herb mayo, bringing out the best of the bacon and lamb.  And don't even get me started on the sweet onion jam.  That jam is to die for.  The sweet onion jam helps balance out the savory nature of a bacon and lamb burger.  All this comes next to a refreshing side of chickpea-sultana salad, which I'm pretty sure is just there to make you feel like you ate something healthy for lunch.

The next two times I went, that's all I got.  I was addicted.  I've branched out over the past few months, but this burger still kills the grill.
If you have room, get the Apple Cinnamon Bread Pudding.  It will change your life.  Again (assuming the burger changes your life, which it will).

Matt.  Will you still let me eat here if I ask you to lamb my burger and bread my pudding?

My  10 year old daughter just followed the recipe for burgers in the junior betty crocker cookbook.  She made the side chips and corn as well.  I have to admit, her burger is better than mine!
Though, Ray's Hell Burger has the DC burger market cornered, you can get a pretty solid lamb burger and sweet potato fries at the district's own mini-chain BGR: The Burger Joint. Here's our review at iFlipForFood: http://bit.ly/cNhCeD
